OVERVIEW

The Edison Neighborhood Plan identifies the Washington Square area along Portage Street as a focus area for streetscaping and public art. The neighborhood plan also emphasizes the importance of the neighborhood’s history and culture. As part of implementation for the neighborhood plan, a mural was installed in Washington Square on the Howard’s Party Store building that depicts the history of Washington Square. This project was a collaboration between the Edison Neighborhood Association (ENA), artist, Patrick Hershberger of Bonus Saves, Howard’s Party Store, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and the City of Kalamazoo.
